William Wayne Smith was born on 7 February 1849 in Mercer Co., Pennsylvania.55 He died on 10 March 1923 at the age of 74 in Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa.55 He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa.55 On the 1850 Census with his parents, William Smith is 2 years old. On the 1860 U. S. Census with his parents, William is 12 years old. He was born in 1848 but all other records state 1851. 1880 United States Census of 1st Ward, Dubuque, Dubuque Co., Iowa shows William with his wife Emma and the children William, Edward and Ruth. William is a steam engineer. 1900 United States Census shows William W. with wife, Emma, sons William A., Charles E., Roy J. and Raymond F. living on Clay Street in Dubuque City, Dubuque Co., Iowa. William is listed as a stationary engineer, William A. as locomotive fireman, Charles as machine operator in cracker bakery. Roy J. has no occupation and Raymond F. is at school. Their daughter Hulda is not listed with them. Their daughter, Hulda is on the 1900 census of St. Louis, Missouri listed as missionary living at a home on Franklin Street with four other missionaries. William W., Ida and their son Raymond are on the 1910 U. S. Census with William A. Smith and his family at 225 Ankeny St. Waterloo, Iowa. [error born at Mercer Co., Pa.] married Nov. [16] 1871 at Lamont, Iowa to Miss Ida E. Hosier. The couple lived at Dubuque before coming to Waterloo in 1903 to live with their son. Mr. Smith was a member of the Court of Honor of Dubuque. Surviving besides the widow are the following children: W. A. Smith of Waterloo, C. Smith Lyons, Ia., Mrs. Ruth Servatius of Casper, Wyo., Miss Hulda Smith of Chicago, R. J. Smith of Orlando., Fla., R. F. Smith of Philadelphia. Ida Emma Isadore Hosier and William Wayne Smith were married on 16 November 1871 in Washington Township, Dubuque Co., Iowa.55,56 13. Ida Emma Isadore Hosier was born on 2 March 1854 in Forrestville Township, Delaware Co., Iowa.13 She died on 23 October 1940 at the age of 86 in Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa.13 She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa.55 Obituary of Mrs. Ida Smith with no source noted: Mrs. Ida Emma Smith, 86, for 15 years a resident of Waterloo, died Wednesday afternoon at the home of her son, William A. Smith, 312 Charles street, of carcinoma and complications. Ida Emma Hosier was born on March 2, 1854, the daughter of J. C. and Olive (Wright) Hosier, at Forestville, in Delaware county, Iowa. She was married to William W. Smith on Nov. 18, 1871, at Lamont, Ia. Her husband died March 10, 1923. Before coming to Waterloo, Mrs. Smith had resided in Dubuque. Surviving are four sons, William, Waterloo; C. E., Clinton, Ia.; Roy J., address unknown, and Raymond F., Chicago; a daughter Huldah, Chicago, and a brother John W. Hosier, Oelwein, Ia; also 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Two daughters, Mamie Smith and Mrs. Ruth Servatius, preceded her in death. The body was taken to the Parrott and Wood funeral home. S. Census of Clinton Co., Iowa, Charles appears with his wife Sarah and sons Charles Jr. and Walter. Charles is a foreman in a cracker factory and his son Charles is a laborer in a sack factory. On the U. S. Census of 1930, Charles and wife Sarah appear at Clinton, Clinton Co. Iowa. Charles' occupation is foreman at Iten Biscuit Company. Obituary from The Clinton Herald, Clinton, Iowa newspaper: Charles E. Smith, Funeral services for Charles E. Smith, who died Friday morning in Jane Lamb hospital, will be held Monday at 2 p. m. in the Shadduck Funeral home. The Rev. F. G. Williams, Grace church, will officiate and the body will be taken to the Fairmont crematorium for cremation. Mr. Smith was born June 16, 1877, at Manchester, Iowa. He was married in 1901 to Sara Sparks in Dubuque and they moved to Clinton, to spend 37 years here. He was an employee of the Iten Biscuit Co and took an active interest in local athletic affairs. He was a prominent authority on White Wyandotte chickens, winning trophies all over the country on his entries. Surviving are two sons, Charles E., Jr. of Chicago, and Walter, Clinton; a grandson, Charles E. III, Chicago, one sister, Miss Hulda Smith, Chicago; two brothers, Raymond of Chicago and Roy of Pensacola, Fla., and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, a brother and sister. | | iv. | Ruth Smith was born on 4 November 1878 in Dubuque, Dubuque Co., Iowa.13,58 She died on 4 October 1928 at the age of 49 in San Diego, San Diego Co., California.58,59 She was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, San Diego, San Diego Co., California.60 In aquiring Ruth's divorice papers from Wyoming I was told by the clerk that the divorce was one of the speediest they had ever seen. They also had records of court cases against Mr. Servatius pertaining to misuse of funds or stealing. Perhaps this had to do with his contracting business. After her divorce in Wyoming in June 1922, Ruth moved to San Diego, California and her name is Ruth Castle. She owned Castle Court (cottages) at 4181-87 30th Street. In later years these units were torn down and a large grocery store was built in its place. Ruth Castle worked as a draftswoman and map maker for Southern Title and Trust Company in 1927 according to the San Diego City Directories. Interment Mt. Hope cemetery. Ruth's death certificate states she had been in California for 5 years 6 months. She left Wyoming in June 1922 and by April 1923 was in San Diego as the widow of John Castle. It is doubtful she had remarried and became a widow in less than a year. She evidently changed her name as well as her daughter's maiden name to escape problems of the past. | | v. | Huldah Beach Smith was born on 28 October 1882 in Dubuque, Dubuque Co., Iowa.16,61,62,63 She died on 5 March 1954 at the age of 71 in Waynesville, Pulaski Co., Missouri.63,64 She was buried in Waynesville Memorial Cemetery, Waynesville, Pulaski Co., Missouri.64 On the U. S. Census of 1900 Hulda Smith is found in the City of St. Louis, Missouri with 4 others listed as missionaries. They are living on Franklin Street. It shows her birth as October 1880. She is born in Iowa, father born in Virginia [should be Pennsylvania] and mother born in Iowa. On the U. S. Census of 1920 for Chicago, Cook Co, Illinois, Huldah appears as a secretary to an institutional church. Also in the household are two ladies who also work as office clerk's at an institutional church. One is Jeanette Spencer, age 35 and married. Anna M. Wilson, is single and 25. Both Jeanette and Anna list their parents as father born in Scotland, speaking English and mother born in Holland, speaking Dutch. On the U. S. Census of 1930 for Oak Park, Cook Co., Illinois, Huldah appears as age 49, divorced, and a welfare worker for Volunteers of America. According to her mother's obituary Hulda was living in Chicago, Illinois in 1940. On her brother William's obituary Hulda was living in Chicago, Illinois in 1943. Her brother Charles E. Smith's obituary in 1945 states his sister Hulda was living in Chicago. Huldah's death certificate has as informant's name: Anna Batten. From the following obituary it is Mrs. David Batten (Anna) and Mrs. Batten's sister, Mrs. Spencer that Huldah was living with. These are the same women who appear with Huldah on the 1920 Census. Her life has been a full one, in business, religious activities and social service. She was a woman of influence, personal magnetism, and kindly deeds. She was a member of the Daylight Chapter No. 611 Order of the Eastern Star, Chicago, Ill., before coming to Waynesville, Mo. Her many friends, located in various parts of the U. S. in many different cities will grieve with us that she is no longer here in person but inspiring memories linger still. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brothers, Will, Ed and Raymond and by a sister Ruth. After a busy life Miss Huldah Smith, chose to spend the sunset years here in the Ozarks, making her home with Mrs. David Batten and Mrs. Batten's sister, Mrs. Spencer. She was happy and contented and will be sadly missed by all. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 6, 1954 at 2:30 P. M. at the Calvary Baptist Church, Rev. Schrimpscher of Rolla, Missouri officiating. Interment was made in the Waynesville Memorial Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of the Hedges Funeral Home of Waynesville. Pallbearers were: Squire Wells, Sterling Wells, Dallas Wells, Harold Wells, Russell Smith and Earnest Massey. | | vi. | Roy John Smith was born on 6 December 1885 in Dubuque, Dubuque Co., Iowa.13 He died on 10 February 1958 at the age of 72 in Coral Gables, Dade Co., Florida.65 He was buried in Cremated.65 Roy was a warrant officer in the Navy. Notations on the back of photos state he had a motor cycle shop (Harley Davidson) in Orlando, Florida. He was living in Orlando when his brother William Ara and sister-in-law Clara visited there in 1923. On his son's birth certificate Roy lists his occupation as engineer. On U. S. census of 1930 Roy J. Smith is with his wife Frances P. and son David R. They are living at 5315 Garden Ave., West Palm Beach, Florida. Roy is a U. S. Customs Inspector and a veteran of World War I. They have a roomer in the household who is also a Customs Inspector and World War I veteran, William B. Lankford. Death Certificate of Roy John Smith from Florida shows he served in World War I. At the time of his death his occupation was Customs Inspector. He died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Coral Gables, Florida. A resident here 14 years he came here from Jacksonville and was a retired U. S. Customs office employee [one line unreadable] Woodman of the World of Orlando, a Mason, an American Legion member past conductor of the 40 AFM [?] [unreadable]. He is survived by his wife Frances, a son David, of Pensacola and two grandchildren. Services will be in the Hialeah-Miami Springs chapel of Van Oradel Mortuary at 8 pm, Wednesday, with cremation to follow. The family requests donations to the Heart Fund in lieu of flowers. Unnamed source of second obituary: Services for Roy John Smith, 73 of 4500 Palm Ave., Hialeah, will be at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Van Oradel Hialeah-Miami Springs Chapel, followed by cremation. A retired U. S. Customs official, he came here 16 years ago from Jacksonville. He died yesterday. A World Ward I veteran, Mr. Smith was past commander of the Woodmen of the World in Orlando, a Mason in West Palm Beach and was in the American Legion in Orlando. Survivors include his wife, Frances, a son David, of Pensacola; and two grandchildren. F. Smith in Chicago, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Brooklyn, New York and Iowa City, Iowa. On the U. S. Census of 1910 Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa, Raymond F. Smith is is the household of his brother William A. Smith, along with their parents. Raymond is a wood worker at a door factory. On the U. S. Census of 1920 Philadelphia City, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania he is living at 2616 N. 27th St. with wife, Lillian, age 28. His occupation is salesman for a bakery. There is a boarder in the household named Albert Farley, an auto mechanic. On the 1930 U. S. census of Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, Raymond F. Smith appears with his wife Lillian. They show they have been married about 20 years. There are no children in the home. Raymond is a salesman of something to do with sewing. Raymond's niece, Ila Jeanne Smith Shepherd Bauer, recalled in December 1999, that when her father William Ara Smith was ill in the Veterans Hospital in Chicago with his first heart attack, Raymond took Jeanne and her sister May to a Cubs baseball game. It was probably in 1936. Raymond's death certificate stated no Social Security Number, he was a veteran of World War I. At the time of his death he was a dramatic instructor for the Chicago Park District. He had lived in Chicago for 20 years. He died of coronary thrombosis, acute arteral sclerosis. The USS Prometheus was a World War I repair ship in the Atlantic Fleet covering the Caribbean and Brest, France area. |
