4. Richard Earl Shepherd was born on 1 May 1904 in Appalachia, Wise Co., Virginia.5 He died on 2 September 1967 at the age of 63 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.6 He was buried in Mt. Emblem, Elmhurst, DuPage Co., Illinois.7 On the 1930 U. S. Census of Oelwein, Fayette Co., Iowa shows Richard with his wife Elsie, children, Charles, Edward and Lucile. Occupation of Richard is fireman for the railroad.

Richard Earl was a Chicago Great Western Railroad engineer. As a railroad workers union representative, he traveled from Chicago to Iowa and visited the children after the divorce from Elsie. He was a member of the Masons.

Elsie Alma Mickels was born on 3 June 1902 in Oelwein, Fayette Co., Iowa.9 She died on 19 October 1989 at the age of 87 in Oelwein, Fayette Co., Iowa.10 She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Fayette Co., Iowa.4 Obituary provided by Oelwein Area Genealogical Society: Mrs. Elsie Medaus died Thursday, 19 October 1989 at Oelwein Care Center, age 87. She lived at 115 First Avenue SW in Oelwein and was a retired homemaker. Funeral services were held at Hintz Geilenfeld Funeral Home and burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. She was survived by 2 sons, Richard Shepherd of Oelwein and Charles Shepherd of Colorado Springs, Colorado and her daughter Mrs. Stanley (Lucile) Zolczynski of Oelwein. She had 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Frederick Medaus who was born 4 November 1898 and died 25 November 1968, age 70. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers, 2 sisters.

Charles Floyd Shepherd was born on 26 January 1923 in Oelwein, Fayette Co., Iowa.11 He died on 25 September 1996 at the age of 73 in Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., Colorado.11,12 He was buried in Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., Colorado. Charles Floyd Shepherd was in the Army during World War II. Family information is that he was in the European Theater. He retired from the Army as a Chief Master Sergeant.

Charles Floyd Shepherd, 73, retired from the Army, died Sept. 25, 1996, at a local care facility. He also worked in civil service at Fort Carson. Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Rock of Ages Lutheran Church, 120 N. 31st St., Blunt Mortuary, 2929 W. Colorado Ave., is handling arrangements. Mr. Shepherd was born Jan. 27, 1923 in Oelwein, Iowa to Richard and Elsie (Mickles) Shepherd. He was married May 4, 1950 to Marie Swick, who lives in Colorado Springs. He also is survived by a son, Charles F. Jr. of Deland, Fla., a daughter Charlotte Powell of Rock Springs, Wyo,; a brother, Richard; a sister Lucille Zolczynski; and nine grandchildren. Mr. Shepherd served in the Army for 23 years during World War II and the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Carson. He was a former commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 101.
