He died on 5 November 1930 at the age of 56 in Horse Prairie, Jefferson Co., Illinois. He was buried in Horse Prairie Cemetery, Horse Prairie, Jefferson Co., Illinois.
On Feb. 5, 1898, William E. bought his first land east of Sesser in Section 17, adding to this until he had enough for each of his children at his death. William E. and Dora h. lived on the hill just northwest of the crossroads of Highway 154 and County Road 36. Sometime between 1906 and 1913, they built a house on the northeast side of the crossroads. In the same area for what once was to be the town of Portland. At one time there had been a store, a millinery store, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop and a townhouse on the same corner. The Barren Township machine shed and townhouse, where elections wre held were still in the yard of his farm into the 1920s. William E. was active in his community. He was supervisor and land assessor for Barren Township, a deacon of the Horse Prairie Church for a number of years and on the board of the bank in Sesser. William E. and Dora had nine children: Infant Son (1897-1897); William Leo (1899-1956) married Delsie Elizabeth Lewis; Guy Edell (1901-1901); Delmar Glenn (1902-1980) married Arline Lemons; Roy Wardner (1904-1941) married Ethel Elkins; Sybel Joy (1906- ) married Loren Heiple; Orval Howard (1907-1909); Mae Irene (1913-1991) married Mitchell Sample. On Jan. 8, 1916 Dora Helen died of pneumonia leaving William E. with six children to raise. On Oct. 20, 1917 he married Mary Illinois (Noie) Whitlow (born Dec. 1, 1888, daughter of David J. and Katherine (Winemiller) Whitlow. They had three children, twins edward (Bud), (1921), married Lola Dillon; and Margaret Catherine (1921-1926); Mary Isabel (1925) married C. J. (Neil) Harriss. William E. died of pneumonia on Nov. 5, 1930, leaving Noie to raise Bud and Mary. Noie lived with ?Bud and his family on the farm until her death on March 7, 1968. William E., Dora and Noie are all buried in Horse Prairie Cemetery. ~Submitted by Theresa M. Sample. On his World War I draft registration he is a farmer at Sheller, Jefferson Co., Illinois. His nearest relative is Sarah J. Kirkpatrick. He registered at Jefferson Co., on Sept. 12, 1918. William Edward Kirkpatrick and Dora Helen Swisher were married on 11 November 1896 in Mulkeytown, Franklin Co., Illinois. Dora Helen Swisher was born on 7 February 1876. She died on 8 January 1916 at the age of 39 in Horse Prairie, Jefferson Co., Illinois. William Edward Kirkpatrick and Dora Helen Swisher had the following children:
William Edward Kirkpatrick and Mary Illinois (Noie) Whitlow were married on 20 October 1917 in Horse Prairie, Jefferson Co., Illinois. Mary Illinois (Noie) Whitlow, daughter of David J. Whitlow and Katherine Winemiller, was born on 1 December 1888. She died on 7 March 1968 at the age of 79 in Horse Prairie, Jefferson Co., Illinois.
