Mary Nell Kirkpatrick was born 17 July 1925 in Amory, Mississippi and died 20 April 1987 in Amory. She attended the Univerity of Tennessee School of Nursing and graduated with honors. She attended school on a scholarship which was funded through the Air Force Cadet Nurse Corps. After graduation she was stationed at Brookley Air Force Base Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. In 1959 Mary Nell moved back to Amory, Mississippi, where in 1969 she was hired as Amory's first school nurse. In 1980, she returned to school at the University of Colorado, and then became Mississippi's first School Nurse Practitioner. She was a founding member of the Mississippi School Nurses Association.

She was married twice, first to Samuel Bond Haskell, Jr., whom she married on 13 October 1954 in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama. Samuel was the son of Samuel Bond and Ruth Mary (Counihan) Haskell. He was born 23 February 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and died 20 January 1988 in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida. She married second to Frank Johnson.

There were three (3) children born of the first marriage.

Mary Nell Kirkpatrick and Samuel Bond Haskell Jr. were married on 13 October 1954 in Mobile, Mobile Co., Alabama. Samuel Bond Haskell Jr., son of Samuel Bond Haskell and Ruth Mary Counihan, was born on 23 February 1929 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio. He died on 20 January 1988 at the age of 58 in Pensacola, Escambia Co., Florida.
