Also in the household is a housekeeper Catherine Kennedy age 23. Joseph is a clerk in a drug store. Sarah works as a milliner and dress maker.

On the 1880 U. S. Census of Carthage, Hancock Co., Illinois, J. H. Kirkpatrick appears with his wife Sarah J. and children James F., Stella E., and Arthur C. Joseph or J. H. is a stock dealer. James F. works as a druggist.

Joseph Hunter Kirkpatrick and Sarah Jane Kennedy were married on 1 April 1853 in Adams Co., Illinois.²⁰ Sarah Jane Kennedy was born on 25 November 1833 in Ligonier, Westmoreland Co, Pennsylvania. She died on 25 June 1895 at the age of 61 in Carthage, Hancock Co., Illinois.
