843. John Smith Kirkpatrick was born on 1 April 1825 in Sangamon Co., Illinois. He died on 21 December 1886 at the age of 61 in Round Springs Township, Mitchell Co., Kansas.


John S. Kirkpatrick, son of minister/farmer Augustus Browning Kirkpatrick, was born in Sangamon County, Illinois, 1 April 1825. He died at round Springs Township, Mitchell County, Kansas, on 21 December 1886. His last words were "all is over". He married Sarah Thompson Bruce, daughter of James and Margaret (Linsey) Bruce. Sarah was born in Morgan County, Illinois, 15 July 1825 and died 29 November 1893 near Beloit, Kansas. They were married on 25 December 1845 in Adams County, Illinois at Mendon. Sarah's parents moved to Morgan County, Illinois from Tennessee about 1815.

John Kirkpatrick's family moved from Sangamon to Adams County, Illinois, in 1829. It was in this county that John learned his letters on a "lind paddele" at the first Sunday School organized in the county. He was converted in 1840. He was received on trial as a preacher in the Illinois Conference in 1852 and then traveled as a Methodist itenerant in Illinois for many years.

Kirkpatrick enlisted in the 7th Regiment of Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, Company G, as a 2nd Lieutenant in February 1862 at Camp Point, Illinois. He was injured on a scouting patrol when his horse stumbled on rocky terrain and fell on him. This was at Cross Hollows, Arkansas in October 1862. He resigned from the service on 21 July 1863 at Cape Girardeau, Missouri (National Archives pension applications of Kirkpatrick and his widow Sarah, his certificate #297,699, her certificate #433,716). Following his military service, John Kirkpatrick returned to his ministry. He suffered progressively from declining health and finally in 1876, moved to Kansas. When his health had recovered somewhat he was assigned to the Beloit Circuit, Northwest Kansas Conference. He took other Kansas assignments until his health failed completely in 1883.

There were seven (7) children born of the marriage.

On the U. S. Census of 1870 for Clayton, Adams Co. Illinois, John S. and his wife Sarah appear with their children. John is a minister.

On the U. S. Census of 1880 for Round Spring, Mitchell Co., Kansas, John appears with his wife Sarah and children Mary A., John B. and Minnie M. John is a farmer and Mary is a dressmaker.

John Smith Kirkpatrick and Sarah Thompson Bruce were married on 25 December 1845 in Mendon, Adams Co., Illinois.89 Sarah Thompson Bruce, daughter of James Bruce and Margaret Linsey, was born on 15 July 1825 in Morgan Co., Illinois. She died on 29 November 1893 at the age of 68 in Beloit, Mitchell Co., Kansas.
