950. Lucilius Moss Kirkpatrick was born on 12 July 1829 in Wilson Co., Tennessee. He died on 8 May 1908 at the age of 78 in Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky.


Lucilius M. Kirkpatrick was born 12 July 1829 in Wilson County, Tennessee. He is the oldest of nine children - four boys and five girls - born to Anderson and Emma Eliza (Moss) Kirkpatrick, natives of Wilson and Sumner Counties, Tennessee, respectively, of Scotch-Irish and German descent.

Anderson Kirkpatrick was a son of John Kirkpatrick, who married a Miss Glendenin (Clendening); they were natives of North Carolina and Virgina, respectively. John Kirkpatrick was the son of Alexander Kirkpatrick who was born in Ireland [Editors note: Actually this Alexander Kirkpatrick was born in Mine Brook, Somerset County, son of Andrew Kirkpatrick who was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Andrew left Scotland to migrate to Ireland with his family and then to America from Ireland in 1736, landing at New Castle, Delaware]. The family came to Tennessee about 1780. The mother of our subject was a daughter of John Moss, who married a Miss Lawrence Shainks; they were natives of Virginia. Lucilius M. was reared on a farm, and received a common school education; he taught several terms of school. He lived with his parents until the age of twenty, when he engaged as a salesman for one year in Lebanon, Tennessee. He then engaged in business for himself for eight years. In 1859 he moved to Logan County, Kentucky and engaged in farming for two years. When the war broke out he returned to Tennessee and engaged in farming and trading until 1877, when he moved back to Logan County. In 1879 he located near Penrod, Kentucky, where he has been engaged in the mercantile business, railroad contracting and farming. He was married in September 1853 to Vandelia S. Coles of Tennessee, a daughter of Samuel and Sally (Walker) Coles, natives of Wilson County, Tennessee and of Irish ancestry. Her grandfather, William T. Coles was born in Dublin, Ireland.

To Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick were born thirteen children; Laura L. (deceased, wife of _____ Kennedy), Sallie E. (Crewdson), John W., Mary E. (deceased), Lizzie M. (Mohon), Lucilius Z., Colistia A., Anderson D., Samuel T., Robert H., Harry L., Sue D., and Frizella. Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick are members of the Presbyterian Church. He is a member of the F. & A.M.

On the 1870 U. S. Census of Nashville (21st District), DAvidson Co., Tennessee, L. M. Kirkpatrick appears with his wife Vandelia and children Laura, Sallie, John W., Mary E., Lizzie M., Zollicoffer, Colistia, Anderson, Samuel and Robert N. L. M. is a farmer.

On the 1880 U. S. census of Myers, Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky, shows L. M. Kirkpatrick with his wife Delia, and children Mary, Lizzie, L. T., Colistia, Anderson, Samuel, Robbert, Louis, Sue and Frizzilla. L. M. is a farmer and his sons work at farm labor.

Lucilius Moss Kirkpatrick and Vandelia Smith Coles were married on 5 September 1853 in Wilson Co., Tennessee. Vandelia Smith Coles, daughter of Samuel Coles and Sarah Sally Walker, was born on 27 August 1832 in Wilson Co., Tennessee. She died on 31 March 1893 at the age of 60 in Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky.
